Being a MOM

When I'm not working and creating and trying to keep the house and just life in general together, I'm simply a mom. I am mostly a laid-back mom who let's her kids be buck wild when they need to and gives hugs whenever wanted or needed. There are a few things that I am pretty crazy about, though. Here are some things that will have me going for hours. So don't ask me about them if you don't want an ear-full.

Breastfeeding -- I am a fanatic on breastfeeding. I have actually now weened all three of my little ones. That is a feat in itself.

I breastfed my eldest until she was two years old. My son was born when she was 14 months old, so I managed to tandem-breastfed the two of them. I weened her and continued on with my little boy until he was 16 months old. Then I became pregnant with my third. I nursed her until she was a little over 2 years old. I know. I'm crazy. But, none of my children drank cow's milk or formula more than a half a dozen times. That is one thing that I am proud of.

Co-Sleeping -- I co-slept with all three of my babies. I was so attached to them I didn't want to make them sleep in a cold, far away crib, alone. These babies always were near me when they were little. I am happy that I was able to attend to their needs quickly and could comfort them in a heart beat. The problem that was created, however was that I was the one who didn't want to send them into the retreat when they were old enough. I then didn't want to send them to their own room's when again, necessary. Everyone is now happily sleeping in their own rooms, in their own beds, and early.

Bedtime -- I am a fanatic about putting my kids down to sleep, EARLY. I'm talking 7 or at latest 7:30pm. I am amazed at the parents who let their kids stay up late with them. I believe that kids need to sleep A LOT for their brain development, bodies to rest and grow, and for the health of the parent. I need MY time to be me, to spend with my husband, or to rest myself.

Guns -- I HATE play guns. Really. I do. I do not allow my kids to play with fake guns, plastic guns, or the like. I don't buy the whole, "they will be boys," or "it's just plastic," arguments. Seriously. Why in the world would anyone want to play with gun or allow their kids to play with guns. Call me a left-wing freak or whatever you would like, but I place no value on little kids playing with guns trying to SHOOT someone, something, anything.

Play Cars -- I'm not even sure what their name actually is. A bunch of neighbors have them. Electric cars, maybe. I actually don't care what they are called. They are dangerous and hurt like hell when your foot gets run over by them. Plus, they just aren't safe.

Helmets -- I am a bit of a helmet nazi. I make my kids wear them at all times. Just kidding. No, really, anytime they are on a bike or scooter, they have to wear them. No excuses or they get off.

Now that I have gotten off my chest my major issues with parenting, here are some areas which I need to work on:

Meals -- I don't cook. Don't enjoy it, and actually suck at it. But my kids need to eat better (less junk).

Brushing Teeth -- Yes, my kids do brush their teeth. But not as good, for as long, or as often as they should. That's my own fault.

Being Creative -- Yep. I suck at giving my kids the opportunity they need or want to be creative. Ironic, isn't it. They are always allowed and encouraged to draw, color, write, doodle, etc. But getting out the oil pastels, acrylic paints, or finger paints, I need to do more. Maybe even tomorrow. Awe, maybe not. The housekeepers just came.

The Art of Pricing

Geometric Print $24.00 Retro Modern Art

Yes, I do believe that there is a true art to pricing products and goods. I just have not mastered this art. There are so many things to take into account. Making art and then slapping a price tag on it seems simple enough. But you need to weigh so many things. Here is a list of things to take into account when pricing handmade items.
- Cost of competitors items: the last thing that you want is to be much greater or much less than the competition. However, you need to stand behind your item and actually believe in what you sell is better than theirs.
- Cost of goods: How much does it cost to make the item? How much are supplies? How much is shipping? How long does it take you to create your masterpiece and then take pictures and actually market the product? What is your time worth?
- Cost of doing business: How much is your insurance? Gas? Electric in your studio? Internet/web hosting? Tax preparations?
- What is the competition charging? Is it fair? Do they make a cheap product? Do they have a low cost of living where they are? Are they just starting out and giving their product away for positive reviews? Are they trying to lose money for "tax," purposes? Are they over charging?
- What you are doing to market the product? Paid advertising? Time on-line for promotions, craft shows? Business cards? Logo's and designs?
- What are you able to write-off as a home-based business? Square footage, phone, cable?

The next thing to consider is if you are just starting your business and you want to start off low. When do you finally say it is time to raise prices? Do you creep them up slowly or all at once? Do you lower your prices because you overvalued your item in the beginning?

These are all things that I have been considering with my own hand-carved, hand-pulled prints. It takes me about 4-6 hours to carve a single design into the lino. It used to take MUCH longer. All of those hours and the time to market, plus the cost of the ink, paper, supplies, etc. come together into my small price tag. Well, I have decided to raise my prices. Yes, you heard that correct. I am telling you upfront that I am raising my prices. By a dollar. Steep, maybe, but necessary to carry on my trade. When I began selling my art, I was basing my prices mostly on the competitors prices. Now that I am more established, I want to set myself apart and produce growth in my company. So with that, welcome a dollar increase.

Now, telling you that prices are increasing is probably not the most politically savoy thing to do, however it's the honest truth.

If you are an artist of any sort, how do you price items? What tricks can you share? Are you comfortable with where your prices are at or do you want to change them?

Ten years have past since the tragedy of 9.11 has occurred. A deliberate attack on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania. Everyone can recall the exact place they were when the news hit. I'd like to share mine. I lived in the Washington DC area.

I was a second grade teacher. The day began as usual. School was in session for about thirty minutes when my teaching partner in the next classroom told me to turn on the CNN on the web. I was shocked to see the news on the first plane hitting the first tower. I can't even tell you what was going through my mind. I thought that it must have been an accident of some sort.

The next thing I knew I was hearing sirens and helicopters and fighter jets flying over the elementary school. It was loud. Very loud. And the jets were flying very low. I checked the news again -- all the while trying to still teach a "normal," class day. My mind was racing, yet I didn't want my innocent students to know that this day was suddenly different.

The Pentagon had been hit by a plane. Many of the students I taught had parents who worked at the Pentagon and worked in government jobs. How was I going to tell them? Should I tell them? These were just some of the thoughts running through my head...

As a teacher we are required to stay in the classroom making sure each and every child is picked up before we are allowed to leave. We stayed and stayed at school while students were slowly picked up by their parents. By 5pm my class was finally all picked up. Each and every one of the students had their parents. They all made it.

I drove home with my teaching partner following me. In an otherwise busy highway, it was empty. The rest of the city had already abandoned their jobs and returned home many, many hours before....it was getting dark, and still loud with helicopters and many, many jets flying overhead protecting us. My heart still races every time I think about it......9.11. Our country and each and every one of us will never be the same......

Baby is off to school

My first born is off to school! She started with a parent/child orientation on Wednesday for Kindergarten. Wow. That's all I have to say. Love the teacher, am amazed with the classroom, and am impressed with how well the school is put together. AND, this is coming from a former Kindergarten teacher and reading coach. I am very judgmental (can you tell)? I am hoping that I made the right decision to not red shirt my sweet girl...

Today was her first real school day. I was so nervous that my sweet child who is barely 5 years old would be lost in the crowd and not ready for Kinder, but much to my surprise, not only did she loved it and can't wait to go back tomorrow!

Unfortunately, she will be not have school tomorrow. Why?! Because of a rare power outage with our sweltering heat wave. Ha. Lovely, eh?

We are getting ready for another trip to the cabin on Friday. I am looking forward to it more this year than year's past. Mostly because now the kids are old enough so that all three can enjoy it. They will be able to swim at the lake, pool, golf (not with me, of course, as I no longer golf), and hike. They want to camp. I'm not a camper either. Especially with the bears and raccoons, and other wilderness animals and such.

Not Red Shirting

My little girl is going to Kindergarten. It's official. Come the first week of September, she will begin her elementary school adventure. She will be attending the local elementary school. It's within walking distance -- which is a huge plus.

My husband and I had been on the fence for sending her or red shirting her for another year. In our neighborhood (and many others around the country) redshirting is more and more common. Her birthday is the beginning of July.

As a previous Kindergarten teacher it is easy to tall the late summer/early fall birthdays in the class. My little girl will be one of them. She will be on the younger side of the class. BUT, she's academically ready and more importantly very excited to start Kindergarten. The real question is....am I ready for her to start?!

There is nothing better than finding that perfect vintage item for your home. Specifically if it reminds you of your childhood or better yet can remain in your house long enough to remind your children of your family. I have found some really fun vintage items that don't require you to search high and low in flea markets or antique shops. Luckily these sellers have done the work for you. What do you think?

These chairs are to die for! I seriously LOVE them. They are from a seller on Etsy out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. They are actual Herman Miller Danish Modern Lounge chairs, designed by George Nelson. The pair $1675.00 ObjectofBeauty.

These salad bowls match the salad serving bowl my husband and I were given as a wedding gift. It's only been six years, but I can't seem to find any that match so well. Aren't these just awesome?! They are from a seller in Kentucky, RhettDidn'tGiveADamn $26.00 for all four wooden bowls.

When I was 3 years old, my parents bought a cabin up in Arnold, California. Every weekend and for longer stretches during the summer and Christmas time we would go up to the cabin. Arnold is in-between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. Now that my own family lives in southern Orange County, it is quite a hike to Arnold, however we manage to go at least every summer. It's important for our kids to spend some time up there visiting. Anyhow....in the stairway hall my dad hung up some old, no...very old tennis rackets. Just like these. These are from thehouseofoliver for $25.00 for the pair. Simply divine. Ironically, thehouseofoliver is located in East Hampton, NY, which is my old college stomping grounds from LIU in Southampton.

Lastly, I want to show all of you an awesome vintage radio. My grandpa had an old barn with a bunch of what I would call crap in it. When it was time to say good bye and clean out the barn, my husband and I came across the neatest find of all. We went home with a really cool **working** vintage radio that sits in our entryway today. It reminds me of this cool one by UpstairsAttic. The vintage radio is $38.00 and is so darn neat.

It's the strangest thing. When I was younger, kids/teachers/parents used to call me Spacey Stacy. Then garbage pail kids came out with Spacey Stacy card. That started a whole other group of other people calling me Spacey Stacy.....now that I (sort-of) create art, I have learned that instead of just spacing out, I just "zone out," to come up with a great new design for my linocuts.

How do I do that? Well, I literally just make my mind focus on absolutely nothing until something or some idea or design pushes it's way into my mind. Kind-of like yoga. Only with art.

I am always in awe of people who have beautiful indoor gardens. I wish I had one of them! Unfortunately, I have a little kitty, Hazel, who will eat and knock over any living plant or flower in the house. That even goes for flowers in a vase. She once knocked over a whole large vase of beautiful flowers onto the head of my (now deceased) other cat.

Indoor gardens provide fresh air and an inviting vibe. Here are my favorites.

The trip to DC was truly wonderful! I loved visiting old friends. It made me miss living on the East Coast!

Amazingly, traveling with the three little ones wasn't as hard as I imagined, at all. The red eye flight from Los Angeles to DC was actually *pretty enjoyable* as far as red eye flights go. The hardest part was trying to keep our guys up until the 10pm flight. The two big kids were awesome and crashed out. The baby didn't sleep too well, but she never does, so that was no different!

In DC, the new air and space museum out by Dulles was something that must be seen (if you haven't already). It blew me away with so many planes. The only thing that I wished that they had was an actual large jet that people can tour/pretend to fly. The museum had a Cessna that people could get into the cock-pit and move the winds around/pretend to fly.

Also perfect for the kids was the Natural History museum with the dinosaur bones/artifacts. Not to be missed! The Hope Diamond is at the Natural History museum.

A couple of hints for those traveling from the west coast back east....keep kids on west coast time! It helped for the bbq's and the wedding. The kids had no problem staying up late for these events. Plus, since it was a trip, it was great to have them enjoy night time activities with us. That being said, I am glad that back home the kids go down to sleep at 7pm so that I can have some time for myself and to enjoy with my husband. Second tip: buy a Lucky Magazine. The stickers in the front keep kids busy on a plane for a long, long, long time!

Now I'm off to try to get ready for the busy week -- organized everything and ramble less!

New Spring Items in the Shop

The San Francisco Giants

I LOVE the Giants. The San Francisco Giants, that is. That is why I have chosen to show my support to Bryan Stow. Bryan is the Giants fan who attended the Dodgers Game to be beat up for wearing a Giants jersey. The way I have chosen to support Bryan by wearing my Giants hats and Giants tees. I invite all of you to join my home-grown support for Bryan by wearing Giants gear whenever you can...

Little story: When I was living in LA, I tried to attend Giants vs. Dodgers games whenever I could. I was pregnant with my oldest daughter when my friend and I went to a game. My belly was huge at this point....anyhow, I begged my friend to also wear a Giants hat with me to this particular game. We had great seats, so it wasn't like we were in the bleachers or anything. We had beer dumped on our heads, were yelled at, had a whole carton of popcorn thrown on us...we were even spit at. And I was a huge pregnant chick. Nice huh? So, although I was not (luckily) beat-up, we were harassed and scared. In support for all Giants fans at Dodgers game, and especially Bryan Stow, wear your Giants gear!

My 3 1/2 year old son's preschool teacher at school spoke to me this week about his behavior. His lack of good behavior, to be exact. He attends school three days a week in the mornings. Apparently he hasn't been listening very well to his teacher. He also kept telling her stories about how Tom bams things on the head, blows things up, and shoots the gun. His teacher wanted to speak to me about this friend, "Tom," and suggest that maybe Tom isn't a good influence....Lovely. Who is Tom? Tom Cat who chases Jerry Mouse in Tom + Jerry, which is constantly on in the car....great parent I am, huh?

I have to say, my favorite and best customers are new shoppers to Etsy. I love that when they find Etsy, they are apprehensive of buying from individual sellers that usually don't have a brick and mortar shop. Then, they see something that they fall in love with and take the plunge. Many are still nervous until they receive the product. That's where I come in. I love to wrap the prints in pretty tissue and ribbon. A thoughtful hand written personalized "thank you," note comes attached. And inside they find the hand-pulled print that they just purchased.

Thankfully I have had nothing but wonderful--and I mean wonderful customers. I have received three hand-written "thank you," notes back because these buyers were unsure of what they were getting and then were so happy to get a nice treat in the post. I have found that these wonderful first-time shoppers have gone on to buy from many more Etsy sellers. I'm just get a special flutter in my belly to know that I helped to convert them to the handmade movement.

Amazingly (and thankfully), my ETSY shop has had quite a bit of sales. My prints seem to be doing well, which is so very exciting for me. I am able to have (what I think of) as a life that I want. One with balance. Kids, Art, and Work. Yes, work. Which brings me to the next exciting piece of news...I will be starting a new job in a little more than a week. I will be teaching on-line education courses for future school teachers. I believe I will have the perfect balance of doing what I love (staying home with my children and working in the art field) while doing something that I am qualified and trained to do (teach college). My life will be much busier, but I wouldn't give it up for anything.

Random Pet Peeves

I hate when people complain about loud cell phone talkers. Seriously, those LOUD on their cell phones are also LOUD in person. Who cares if someone is on their phone in public - is it any different than that person speaking to an actual person?
I can't stand how so many women dye their hair blond to hide the gray. Its totally fine if they have always had light colored hair, but I'm talking about people with dark colored hair going blond--if you are going to dye your hair anyhow--stay brunette!
Long nails. I've said it before--long finger nails + toes nails are just plain gross.
Women who try to "rock" the white jeans. Yep, that was me this year. No longer. Plus, how can you possibly keep your butt clean all day long?
I can't stand when people only wear sweats or workout clothes--even when they aren't working out! Throw on jeans and a tee or something! Anything!
When people say, "wow-you must have your hands full." Well, no shit! I have 3 babies. Its hard. Must you comment. Your comment just wasted me a good two minutes where I've probably just lost one of my little darlings because I had to stop to listen to your comment.
Using the kitchen sponge to clean off counter tops or worse--the floor. Seriously gross--and I am NOT a scared of germs.

As a matter of fact, I could see him doing all of the peddling and me just enjoying the ride. On February 26th, 2011, in San Clemente, I will be showing paintings and prints to a group of Women in Business Owners in San Clemente. Again, wine will be served. Desserts, too.

Am I crazy?

If you are squeamish, don't read on. My husband thinks I'm crazy. I went in for my d + c this afternoon to remove the polyp. Only it turned out to not be a polyp, or anything for that matter. It turns out that the reason why I have been bleeding since Thanksgiving is that the pill I have been on has caused all of the lining in my uterus to be gone, raw, and bleeding. Gross, I know. So, hopefully with some hormonal changes, and new birth control, I will stop bleeding and have more energy. I just want to feel like myself. And, no, I am not crazy.

Lino Prints

When I was growing up, my dad wanted me to become a jeweler. I learned how to carve molds, cast gold settings, set stones, what to look for in stones, how to size rings, and other jewelry making essentials. Mostly, I learned about what it takes to start and be successful in a small business. I spent countless hours at the store, first just hanging out and playing, then as I grew older, actually working. My dad wanted me to take over his business. He became a jeweler when he was 13, opened his own store at 18. He's 66, now...he spent hours on end at the store or at his work bench at home. He worked his butt off.

Seeing all of this, I decided I had no interest in becoming a jeweler. Way, way too much work. Especially for someone who doesn't have a passion for jewelry - and really doesn't even wear much of it. I went into teaching, instead.

I have been painting since at least high school, if not earlier. I love the smell and texture of paint. Now, twelve years later, three kids later, and no longer teaching, I am an artist. I am taking after my dad and trying to build up my own business and turn my "hobby" into something successful. I don't have the hours on end to devote to creating art, but I try to sneak in as much as possible.

I have recently begun to experiment with making lino prints. Why switch from painting? Well, I am not giving up on painting. I am going back to my roots. Corney, but true. Making lino prints is very similar to the same feel when you make jewelry -- I use sharp instruments to carve out the print from linoleum. It's just like carving out a mold to cast. Instead of casting, I am able to make prints that are different each time. It's a familiar feeling, yet so wonderfully new. It's more organic and less exacting. Hopefully this will bring new success in my handmade business and in my creative outlet.

Monoprints

Here are a couple of my recent monoprints. A monoprint (for anyone who doesn't know) is just a handmade print that is unique. No two monoprints are the same. I carved out the designs from foam boards. I then applied acrylic paint with a paint brush (for added texture) and made prints on 140lb paper. The paper is super heavy and with a lot of texture, too. Lastly, I added some embellishments with a tiny bristle square paint brush for added color. Easy, yet modern and fun to create!

These first three prints are part of "the blob" series. Basically they are blogs that everyone can see what they want out of them. They can be whatever you see...a person, a dinosaur, a ?? I have also done blogs in acrylic paint on canvas and charcoal on paper. These are my printed blobs.

These last three prints are part of the "chain gang" series. The prints were made with the black acrylic paint and then embellished. Personally, I love the one with the lime green the best. It just has a funky vibe.

Valentines Cards

Getting Better!

It has finally been discovered that I don't have mono and instead have a polyp in my uterus and anemia due to bleeding from mid-November until now (minus two weeks). Nice, huh? After starting iron and resting, I am feeling much, much much better. Now if only I can snap my fingers and finish everything I couldn't do while I was in a sleepy fog, I'd be so grateful.

6-Year Anniversary

So today marks my 6-year anniversary to my dear husband. We met in May of 2000. We lived on separate coasts. I was in San Jose while he was in DC. I moved to DC in July of 2000, just as he was transferred to London for work. Then he moved to LA, and I remained in DC until 2002, when I moved in with him in LA. We bought our house in West Hollywood in 2004. We were married by Elvis in Vegas in 2005. We then had Sophia in July of 2006 and bought our house in San Clemente in April of 2007. Marcus was born in September of 2007, and Claudia in June of 2009. It has been a constantly changing relationship and life since I met him, but I wouldn't give it up for anything! The only thing that I regret is forgetting our anniversary this year. My lovely (and organized) husband reminded me on New Years Eve about our anniversary. I'm sad to say, I've been sick and without energy that I didn't buy him a gift. I need to make it up to him somehow.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful 2011. Its funny, New Year's Eve and New Year's day are actually my least favorite holidays. I have just had such decent past few years that a new year/fresh start makes no difference to me. I'm happy with what I've got. Plus with the little sleep I do get, I'd rather go to bed than ring in the New Year and lose sleep.

New Year Resolutions


I actually don't do resolutions. I have goals that I like to work on throughout the year, but no "resolutions". This year I am working on keeping the house and my office/art space organized. I also want to work on not feeling guilty for taking time out for me. I want the time I have with my kids to be more quality time while the time I have for me to also be quality time. "Focus" is the best way to describe how I need to spend my time.

Paint on your Hand Tip

Just a quick tip: if you are painting with acrylic paints, the easiest way to clean your hands without going to the sink is to use wet wipes. I use Pampers Wet Wipes as a cleaning solution for most things (spots of dirt on the floor or spills). Tonight I was actually amazed at how well you can get paint sploshes off your hands and keep on painting. I then tested it on paint that I had (on purpose) spilled acrylic paint on my pajamas. Very easily I was able to rub the paint out. I'm sure any brand wet wipe will work.

It's been a while...

Christmas has passed, tree is stored away, and now it's time to think back on the 2010 year. My little one is now 18 months, which makes my life so much easier in many ways - yet harder all the same. My two older ones are both in preschool together, which is truly wonderful. My husband is working hard as ever - and me...I'm painting and being a mom. I am thankful for my family and for the wonderful experiences we have had this year.

I am also looking forward to 2011. I don't do resolutions, but I do think of goals that I would like to work on. I can't even remember my last year's goals, but here goes this years...organize my life by simplifying some of the things I have committed to do. I need to decline some of the things that I have agreed to do in order to really make the things I actually do count for my family and my personal well-being. Easier said than done.

I won't be caught dead in a fur coat. I can't believe that animals are killed just for their pelts for coats. Sure enough, my dad sold my grandmother's house (who died), and gave me a great old trunk. I sent the trunk off to to be refinished. Before I sent it off, I found 6 mink coats inside the trunk. Some are short, some long, and in various colors. Seriously, what the heck do I do with all of these coats. I have a hard time looking at them let alone trying to do anything with them.

I thought of donating them to homeless people I see on the streets, but I don't want them to be harassed for wearing fur. In my younger days, I would have been the one making snide remarks to those who chose to wear fur. I'm not proud of being so rude, but at least I stood up for my principles.

Anyhow, back to my grandmas furs...the funny thing is that she NEVER left her house. I have no idea why she even owned furs since she hated leaving her house..so for the time being, I'm stuck with these coats. They are sitting in a large pile in my hallway since I have no place to store them and certainly don't want to touch the poor animals who unjustly died.

New Acrylic Paintings

Here are my three latest acrylic paintings. The first painting is simply stripes of blue, brown, dark gray, and white. The second two pictures are two in a series of stripes. They look similar, but are actually two different paintings. They both have recycled brown paper grocery bags included for added texture. I love using anything that can add dimensions and vivid details to my paintings.

Charcoal Drawings

Visit to the North Pole

We took the train to the "North Pole," tonight at the Irvine Regional Park. When we got off at the "North Pole," my kids were terrified (yet again) of Santa. They had been talking about how much they wanted to see him and tell him what they wanted for Christmas -- to only hold my leg and not let go when it was time for the annual visit. Even the baby cried. So sad, but yet so vivid in my memory! Gotta love Santa!

Paint Brush-Cleaning Tip

I have used hydrogen peroxide for just about everything. I have used it up my nose (and my kids) using a q-tip to clean out the boogies, in mouth to kill germs, and have just tried it on cleaning dirty paint brushes. Guess what?! It is wonderful! I use acrylic paints and often don't have the time to clean my paint brushes right after I use them. I hate to let them soak in hot water because if they are wooden, they warp. Even if they aren't wooden, the bristles never return to the perfect pre-soaked way. So, I placed the used and crusted brushed into the dry sink for a day until I had time to return to them. Then I drizzled them in hydrogen peroxide, rinsed them in hot water and then "painted/washed them with my hand in simple bar soap. Viola! Clean brushes. Toothpaste works well, too.

I have changed the way the blog looks. I have updated it and I hope that it is more appealing to your eyes. I loved the green retro background that I had, but it was hard to load on phones and my mini-computer that I keep in the kitchen. This new look is sleek and modern. What do you think?! Christmas Decorations Outside

When is it too early to put up Christmas decorations on the outside of your house?! A few nights ago I drove my kids around looking at all of the beautiful homes decorated for the holidays. Most of our neighborhood decks their Griswald homes out for Christmas. After admiring all of the lights and figurines and even a waving Santa, I decided to go and buy some new decorations. This year we will join the race to have the most decorated house - and not just our plain white Christmas lights. The problem is that at Target and Lowes, every single decoration that is left on the shelves is either gaudy or just not tasteful. The good lights and decorations are all gone. Sold. Which begs me to ask when is too early to buy outdoor decorations and actually put them up?! Is it normal now to decorate before Thanksgiving?!

Frugality

I am NOT a saver. Well, I take that back. I am not a coupon-cutting, sale shopper. Nope. I will admit it. I hate sales and for the most part anything free or won. I will spend my hard-earned money on exactly what I want. I'd much rather have a cozy, beautiful cashmere sweater that fits perfectly and is the best color (gray), than have three cheap, bland, cashmere sweaters in whatever color is on sale. Plus, I am totally skeeved out by the germs and possible lice or scabies from trying on things from the sale rack. Am I a snob? Well, of course, but again I'd just rather have the quality of something that will last a bunch of years than something that is not made well and won't even make it through a season.

I don't care about winning things or entering into sweepstakes or anything like that. Literally, the only thing I ever join in to win is the yearly hgtv dream home. Other than that, my motto is 'less is more' and 'there is always a cost.' And because of the cost that always comes from "free" or "discounted" wares, I'd much rather pay more money up front and get and use what I want than to deal with the hassell of getting something fixed or returning something. Yep - I said it. I don't do returns, either. Seriously, I won't buy it unless I want to keep it. It takes way too much time (which equals money) and gas, and struggles (lugging 3 kids back to a store for a "quick" return), that it's just not worth it to me to buy something unless I'm planning on keeping it. Coupon cutting?! Really - I have way too much to do than to waste my time (which does equal money), to sit and cut for only a few pennies.

I'm in awe of those who can save money. Really, I am. It's just not me. I will do with less - and I do mean less- than to try to save money. My pantry is a perfect example. I have very little food stashed away in there. Every time I go to one of my neighbor's houses to hangout I am always seriously impressed with the choices they have in their pantry. It's impressive. It's just not me. Not a thrifty type of person.

I'll try to give a quick update...We have had family from NYC out to visit and stay with us followed by my dad staying with us and three very sick (colds) babies. Thanksgiving is thankfully over--and was a lot of fun and filled with loving family and friends. We had a total of 15 people for our somewhat formal feast. Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. My husband made a wonderful meal...unfortunitly my three children missed out on the turkey and fixings because they were having no part of it--and ended up eating peanut butter and jelly.

Earlier in the day we tried to run the Dana Point Turkey Trot. I say we "tried" because although we did finish the race, a lot of it was me walking. The first 100 or so yards, my youngest insisted on being held while I ran. Then the last mile, she again refused to stay in her stroller and insisted on being held. Thank god for Advil for my strained back.

We have put up our indoor Christmas decorations and have decorated the tree. It is so pretty. I am sad to say that I am missing a huge box of Christmas decorations. I have no idea where it went. I am positive it is gone. Last year I bought 5 beautiful golden sparkly reindeer for a tabletop decoration. Now there is only one that I can find--meaning 4 are missing. Strange.

Next up is to buy some more Christmas decorations and have our Christmas lights installed. Hopefully that will all take place this week. Christmas cards have been ordered and about half of our gifts have been purchased. It's just time to enjoy the season!

I'm rambling again, I know...also, this week (more importantly) I arranged for my art to be shown/hung at a mini-gallery that is inside of the wine storage building that my husband stores his wine. A lot of restaurant owners store their wine there and end up buying the art work that hangs at the gallery. If nothing else, it gives me a little bit of local exposure.

I am thankful for many things this year. First and foremost, my wonderful husband and three amazing little babies. I am thankful that I am able to follow my dreams and am supported to do so. I am also thankful for being able to host a upcoming Thanksgiving feast with friends and family - while my husband slaves away in the kitchen. I am thankful for all that I have and the opportunities that I have been given. Four more days until Thanksgiving!

Stress off the Table

I am very happy to announce that I have declined an offer that may have furthered my career to instead continue to be a happily crazy stay-at-home mommy and painter. Instead of feeling sad, I actually feel like a huge load of crap has been lifted off of my chest and I am able to not only breathe again, but live. I know, sounds corny. I just had to announce my free feeling to you all and let you know I will return with more fashion/art/home finds very soon.

I took a break in the month of October from painting. My passion. I was at a stand-still with my creative juices and I was seriously lacking the time necessary for follow-through and completion of any paintings. What I noticed is that I was much more grouchy and agitated than normal. I was feeling stressed and just not myself. That is the same way that I feel when I don't have a chance to practice yoga. As long as I am either practicing yoga or painting, my chi is in a better place. Well, come November, I have found my creative streak again and have started and finished four acrylic paintings, already. I am now back to my (*almost*) happy place. Here are my newest creations...

The first two are dark army green acrylic base with an even deeper green stripe with brown recycled paper bag inset into the stripe. They are topped off with a heavy gloss acrylic varnish on artist wrapped canvas. The third painting is also a deep green with gold, black and white stripes. It was painted on artist wrapped canvas. The last is a midnight blue acrylic painting with black, gold, and white stripes painted on canvas board. All four of these have the modern-retro vibe that I so love.

Trends that need to go Part II

This is Part II of fashion trends (or just trends, in general) that need to go away. They are bad, tacky, and mostly just gross. Again, I am sorry, in advance, for offending anyone, but these are things that bug me. Can you add to this list?! What drives you nuts?! Bare Bellies. Seriously, I don't care that the designers are trying to bring it back. So many of the Spring 2011 shirts and blouses are short. The problem being that hardly anyone can truly wear those styles since most women are not a size 0, and under 20 years old who can afford the designers items. So, either there are going to be a ton of clothes not selling at the shops or fat and old women are going to look horrible in this trend.

On a similar note, Belly Piercings. Um, gross. Really not a cute place to pierce - and I actually don't mind most piercings. But the belly is unoriginal and just icky.

Corn Rows. Seriously, must you get your hair in corn rows every time you go on a tropical vacation?! No. So, don't. You just look silly, especially at work. Especially if you are blond.

No more thongs/G-string panties showing because your pants are too loose. It's a stupid trend. Use a darn belt, if you need to. Or wear a long shirt AND a belt. Don't show us your out-of-date 1990's style undies. For god's sake, wear regular panties or boy-cut under ware.Thongs may still be sold in stores, but it doesn't mean they should be.


The frenemy

Toe Rings are way passed their prime. And another icky-type thing. Just look at how silly they look.Now imagine them on someone with ugly toes/feet. Why would you want the focus of people to be down at your feet instead of up - at your pretty face?!

Doesn't this just scream of Paris?...Ok, it may be a little cheesy, but it takes me back to my last visit. I was living in Washington DC and my husband in LA. We flew out to Paris to meet for Valentines Day. That was pre-kids and when we were still courting. He had Pneumonia, but flew to France anyways. He told his doctor that he would rather brave being sick than to cancel and have to deal with my wrath. Then the restaurant that we had planned to go to (a wine cellar in a cave) burned down. It was a memorial trip, one that I think of often. Paris.

Thanksgiving jingles

This year we will be running (well walking) the Dana Point Turkey Trot 5k. It will be the fourth year we have done it. It's a great time - and makes me not feel as guilty when I gorge myself later in the day at Thanksgiving dinner.

The teacher in me is coming out......Every Thanksgiving time, I sing this jingle in my head....non-stop. I have no idea who wrote it or where it came from, but here goes:

Still loving the spats!

I am still really in love with spats. I have attempted to sew my own, although so far unsuccessfully. I am still trying to learn to sew. My mom has been visiting all week long and has tried to teach me to sew. She hates my new cheapie machine. She told me, "you get what you pay for..." So, I will just admire the adorable handmade spats (and leg warmers, too) from afar for now and hopefully learn to sew soon. Here are some I am loving....
